How it Works

Fluconazole works by stopping fungi from making a key substance called ergosterol, which is needed for their cell walls. Without ergosterol, the fungus can’t grow properly and its cell walls become weaker, helping to stop the infection. Fluconazole mainly affects fungi, so it doesn’t harm human cells the same way. Instead of killing the fungus right away, it slows its growth.
