Pros

Cons

  • Not meant for long-term use
  • Do not use if you have an ulcer (can worsen existing ulcers), have a bleeding disorder, have black/bloody stools beforehand or kidney disease
  • Do not use in anyone under 18 if they have flu-like symptoms or chickenpox because of the risk of developing Reye’s syndrome Avoid using if you have an allergy to salicylates
  • Do not use in the 2nd half of pregnancy (effects not known in first half of pregnancy)
  • It can cause your stool to look darker (which is harmless) and your tongue to look darker but can be alarming to some people

 

How to take

  • Swallow 2 liquicaps every 1/2 hour – 1 hour as needed with water
  • Maximum dose: 16 capsules in 24 hours
  • Would recommend seeing your physician if you require this multiple times a day long-term or are taking this for more than 2 days in a row

Side Effects

Common: Nausea, black tongue, black stool
Get emergency help if: notice any changes in your behaviour (anxiety, confusion, depression, slurred speech), experience hearing loss or ringing in your ears, worsening symptoms

Drug Interactions

If you take many different medications, talk to a health care professional first because Pepto-bismol has quite a few different drug interactions. Here are some common ones:

Can reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics like doxycycline and tetracycline so take the antibiotic 2 hours before or 6 hours after pepto-bismol

Can increase concentrations valproic toxicity and phenytoin, leading to toxicity
Can increase bleed risk if you are taking ASA (acetylsalicylic acid) or anticoagulants

Speak to a professional especially if you are taking blood pressure lowering agents, methotrexate, phenytoin, salicylates, sulfinpyrazone, tetracycline antibiotics, and valproic acid or other seizure medications, diabetes medications, and pain medication
